British authorities are exploring the possibility of charging the key suspect linked to the disappearance of Madeleine McCann in the UK. The Metropolitan Police disclosed that they have sent a formal request to 49-year-old German national Christian Brueckner for questioning, which he declined. Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley stated that the investigation into Madeleine’s vanishing in Praia da Luz, Portugal, in 2007, is still classified as a missing person case.
Sir Mark mentioned that the police are reassessing both the German and Portuguese inquiries now that Brueckner has been released from prison. He emphasized that Brueckner remains a person of interest and that they are evaluating the progress of the investigations in both Germany and Portugal.
When asked about the potential extradition of Brueckner to the UK, Sir Mark explained that there are numerous legal considerations, especially regarding murder cases involving British nationals. He acknowledged the diligent efforts of the German police in the case.
Brueckner had been serving a seven-year sentence in Germany for a 2005 rape conviction in Praia da Luz, where the McCann family was staying. He has consistently denied any involvement in Madeleine’s disappearance.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Cranwell, leading the Metropolitan Police’s investigation, affirmed their commitment to pursuing all leads despite the lack of an interview with Brueckner. The investigation, known as Operation Grange, has been ongoing since 2011 and has incurred significant costs.
Authorities in Germany, Portugal, and the UK have conducted multiple searches in connection with Madeleine’s case, including recent efforts near Lagos, Portugal. Brueckner had been in the region between 2000 and 2017 and had captured images near a reservoir. In a separate legal matter, a German court acquitted him of alleged sexual offenses in Portugal due to insufficient evidence and unreliable witnesses.
