“UK and France Support Palestinian Statehood at UN”

Yvette Cooper addressed the United Nations, emphasizing that recognizing Palestinian statehood was crucial for preserving the path to peace. During her speech at the UN General Assembly, the foreign secretary highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the two-state solution, which she described as being under severe threat of collapse. Cooper stressed the importance of not succumbing to despair despite the challenges posed by extremists on all sides.

Acknowledging the heartbreaking ordeal of families with loved ones held captive by Hamas after the tragic October 7th attacks, Cooper criticized Benjamin Netanyahu’s government for exacerbating the dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza by escalating conflict and obstructing aid efforts. She pointed out the distressing reality of children suffering from starvation while essential supplies are blocked at the border, and she raised concerns about the expansion of settlements jeopardizing the possibility of a viable Palestinian state.

Reflecting on history, Cooper noted that Britain had previously recognized Israel but had failed to fulfill the promise of supporting Palestinian rights. She announced the UK’s decision to join over 150 member states in recognizing the state of Palestine as a step towards safeguarding peace and stability in the region.

In a significant move, President Emmanuel Macron of France also declared support for Palestinian statehood, drawing applause from world leaders and diplomats. Macron emphasized the need to end hostilities, secure the release of hostages held by Hamas, and work towards a lasting peace agreement between Israel and Palestine. He pledged to establish a French embassy in Palestine upon the release of all Israeli hostages and outlined a strategy to tie support for Israel to efforts aimed at ending conflicts and advancing peace negotiations.

Macron’s commitment to a two-state solution resonated with his call for a sovereign, independent, and demilitarized Palestinian state, alongside mutual recognition between Israel and Palestine. The international community’s efforts to promote peace and stability in the region were further underscored by the Mirror’s launch of a dedicated US Politics WhatsApp community, offering subscribers real-time updates and exclusive news coverage from across the Atlantic.
