A tragic incident on Aloha Airlines Flight 243, traveling from Hilo to Honolulu in Hawaii, resulted in a devastating outcome as the aircraft experienced a catastrophic decompression mid-flight. The Boeing 737-297 sustained significant damage, causing terror among passengers who faced an unforgettable ordeal.

On April 28, 1988, the flight encountered an explosive decompression due to suspected maintenance issues and metal fatigue, leading to a part of the fuselage breaking. Despite managing a safe landing in Maui, not all passengers made it back unscathed. During the horrifying event, flight attendant Clarabelle Lansing, with 37 years of experience, tragically lost her life after being ejected from the aircraft when the roof blew open near the fifth row of seats.

Although Lansing’s body was never recovered, reports indicate that she was the sole fatality, while eight others, including another cabin crew member, suffered severe injuries. Additionally, 57 passengers sustained injuries during the sudden depressurization despite being securely belted in their seats.

Following a routine takeoff, the aircraft reached its cruising altitude of 24,000 feet when a section of the roof unexpectedly ruptured, causing chaos in the cockpit. The subsequent investigation by the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board attributed the accident to metal fatigue exacerbated by crevice corrosion, marking a significant event in aviation history that led to policy changes.

The 19-year-old aircraft, exposed to corrosive coastal environments, was deemed irreparable after the incident and was dismantled. Shockingly, a passenger revealed seeing a fuselage crack before boarding but did not report it, highlighting a missed opportunity for preventive action.

The dramatic events of the flight have been immortalized in various media adaptations, notably in the film Miracle Landing. In remembrance of the fallen flight attendant, Gayle Yamamoto, Honolulu International Airport dedicated a serene garden in her honor within terminal one in 1995, providing a tranquil space for reflection amid the hustle and bustle of the airport.
