LIV Golf standout Tom McKibbin attributes his record-breaking round of 60 at the Hong Kong Open to his drive to qualify for prestigious tournaments like the Masters and the Open. Despite advice from fellow Ulsterman Rory McIlroy to join the Saudi-backed tour earlier in the year, McKibbin opted to pursue his own path.
Having secured a PGA Tour playing card after finishing in the top 10 in the Race to Dubai last season, McKibbin made a solid debut in the LIV Golf season, ranking 17th individually and earning $5,768,351. However, his current world ranking of No.109 leaves him unqualified for the upcoming Majors.
The Hong Kong Open not only offers a generous prize fund but also provides a coveted opportunity for the top player to secure spots at Augusta and Royal Birkdale next year. McKibbin, aiming to make his Masters debut, delivered an exceptional performance with his career-best score of 60 in the opening round.
Expressing his motivation to excel, McKibbin emphasized the significance of competing for such prestigious rewards, stating that the high stakes inspire him to perform at his best. As a young professional golfer, McKibbin made headlines by clinching victory at the 2023 Porsche European Open, signing a lucrative deal with Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team.
McIlroy had cautioned McKibbin about potentially jeopardizing his chances to participate in major tournaments and the Ryder Cup. However, McKibbin justified his decision to pursue consistent competition opportunities, given his current absence from major events.
While McKibbin’s remarkable achievement surpassed previous records set at the Hong Kong Open, the tournament attracts a strong lineup of 33 LIV players, including past champions like Patrick Reed and Charl Schwartzel. Notably, Graeme McDowell faced challenges upon arrival at the event but remains determined to improve his performance.
With upcoming events like the Australian Open and the South African Open offering further chances to secure Masters berths, the Hong Kong Open plays a crucial role in the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, presenting opportunities for players to advance in the LIV Golf circuit.
