“Sky Introduces Real Time Feature for Near-Instant Sports Streaming”

Sky is set to introduce a new feature called Real Time for Sky users, just in time for the upcoming World Cup. This enhancement aims to minimize the streaming delay experienced by many viewers, especially during live sports events. Traditionally, services like BBC iPlayer and ITVX have lagged behind terrestrial and satellite broadcasts by up to 40 seconds, causing synchronization issues for viewers. Real Time is designed to reduce this delay significantly, providing a more immediate viewing experience.

Initially launched for Premier League matches in 2024, the lower-latency streaming technology is now being expanded to include coverage of major events like the World Cup from BBC and ITV. Sky’s statement mentioned that Real Time, powered by Sky OS, will bring live sports closer to real-time by reducing the latency between the live action and what viewers see on their screens.

To activate Real Time, viewers can opt for the feature during supported live sports broadcasts by selecting the Real Time option on their screens. This feature is available on both Sky Glass and Sky Stream devices through an opt-in button or dedicated channels like BBC One HD RT, ITV1 HD RT, and ITV4 HD RT.

Sky’s transition to Sky Glass and Sky Stream signifies a shift away from the satellite-based Sky Q platform. These services operate over broadband, offering benefits such as easy self-installation, regular software updates, and seamless integration with popular streaming platforms like Netflix, Apple TV+, and Disney+. As Sky focuses on internet-delivered television and improved streaming experiences, Sky Glass and Sky Stream remain central to its strategy.

The Real Time feature update is crucial for Sky’s streaming future, enhancing the viewing experience for millions of Sky users looking to enjoy live sports events with reduced latency and fewer spoilers.
