In a scathing critique of Reform leader Nigel Farage, Sir Ed Davey cautioned that a Britain under Farage’s influence would resemble a Trump-inspired nightmare, with sinister forces backing him. Sir Ed lambasted Farage, asserting that racism and misogyny would receive implicit approval from leaders, and the NHS would be disassembled. Addressing supporters, Sir Ed emphasized the moral obligation of the Liberal Democrats to stand united against Reform.
However, Sir Ed faced a fierce backlash for suggesting that gun regulations would be relaxed under Farage’s rule, potentially exposing children to the threat of mass shootings. Reform swiftly denounced Sir Ed’s statements as “utter nonsense” and belittled him as an inconsequential figure.
Speaking at the party conference in Bournemouth, Sir Ed painted a bleak picture of Farage’s envisioned nation, highlighting the absence of the NHS, leading to exorbitant medical costs for patients or even denial of healthcare. He also criticized the potential reliance on expensive fossil fuels from Putin and the environmental damage caused by fracking, all while climate change continues unabated.
Sir Ed further drew attention to Farage’s past criticisms of the UK’s handgun ban, suggesting that if Reform gained power, gun laws could be loosened, necessitating schools to educate children on responding to mass shootings. Although Farage had previously criticized the ban on handguns following the Dunblane massacre, Reform has clarified that they do not intend to relax firearm regulations.
Describing Farage’s agenda as reminiscent of Trump’s America, Sir Ed urged to prevent Farage from reshaping Britain in a similar manner. He cautioned against the dark forces aligning to support Farage’s vision, labeling him a false patriot and aligning him with figures like Elon Musk, Vladimir Putin, and Donald Trump, contrasting their stance with the Liberal Democrats’ commitment to the British populace.
Appealing to disillusioned Tories, Sir Ed implored them to join forces with the Liberal Democrats to safeguard the country. He also signaled their intent to attract Labour voters, criticizing the government’s lack of foresight and likening Labour to “Continuity Sunak.”
During Sir Ed’s address, Farage commented on social media about Sir Ed’s fixation on him, expressing willingness to fund psychiatric assistance for Sir Ed.
