Russian Foreign Minister Vows Retaliation Amid Drone Discovery

German authorities are probing a drone loaded with explosives and a detonator discovered at Leipzig airport, while Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has indicated Moscow’s intention to increase retaliation against countries supporting Ukraine.

In an interview with VGTRK, Russia’s state media, Lavrov stated, “We will employ more severe methods to dismantle all support for Kyiv’s war machine from the West. We are already taking action.”

The drone, carrying an unspecified explosive device, was found by an airport employee in the security section of the cargo operations zone near Leipzig airport’s south runway, classified as critical infrastructure.

Leipzig serves as a key NATO airport facilitating the transport of armaments, ammunition, weapons, and military gear to Ukraine through flights operated by Ukrainian cargo firms.

According to Germany’s interior minister, the discovery of the drone next to a Ukrainian cargo plane signifies a heightened level of danger for Germany. Alexander Dobrindt mentioned that the incident is being treated as part of a sophisticated hybrid threat scenario, indicating it was not the work of amateurs.

German authorities are investigating the case and have not disclosed the drone’s origin. U.S. intelligence officials previously suggested that the drone likely belonged to the Russian government, as reported by the Wall Street Journal.

While Berlin is enhancing anti-drone capabilities, officials are cautious in attributing the incident prematurely. Dobrindt emphasized the ongoing investigative phase and refrained from making premature comments.

The German Interior Minister highlighted ongoing concerns about Russia’s utilization of drones, espionage, sabotage, and influence operations in Europe, particularly ahead of upcoming regional elections in Germany.

Dobrindt described Germany as a daily target of hybrid warfare involving espionage, sabotage, cyber attacks, and covert actions by foreign powers aiming to destabilize the country and instigate political and social changes.

In a separate incident, German federal prosecutors arrested an individual suspected of spying for Russia and scouting sabotage targets related to Berlin’s military support for Ukraine and its defense industry.

The Institute for Strategic Dialogue (ISD) has been monitoring Russia’s interference in Germany through Operation Overload, focusing on spreading disinformation to undermine Ukraine’s war effort and destabilize democracies.

Officials warned of attempts to influence German politics and society, particularly during upcoming regional elections, indicating a continuous threat from adversaries.

Hans-Jakob Schindler, from the Counter Extremism Project, suggested that Russia is testing Germany’s tolerance levels with various attacks, including the recent drone incident in Leipzig, seen as an aggressive escalation of interference tactics.

Schindler raised concerns about the blurred lines between defense measures and direct conflict, emphasizing the need to establish clear boundaries to deter further escalation from hybrid to conventional attacks.

He noted Lavrov’s remarks as a departure from past Kremlin denials, interpreting them as a veiled admission of Russia’s involvement in hybrid warfare operations and a signal of intensified aggression against Europe, the West, and NATO.
