In a recent post, Zak, Zelda, and Cody Williams expressed their intention to maintain the Instagram account “therobinwilliams” as a trustworthy space dedicated to preserving their father’s legacy authentically and with care. They aim to share his unique talent and humor with the world by posting memories, photos, and videos that reflect his extraordinary life and work.
Throughout his illustrious career in film, television, and theater, Williams achieved fame for his roles in projects such as the TV series “Mork & Mindy” (1978–1982) and movies like “Good Morning Vietnam” (1987), “Dead Poets Society” (1989), “Mrs. Doubtfire” (1993), and “Jumanji” (1995). His performances earned him accolades, including an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for “Good Will Hunting” (1997) and a special achievement Golden Globe Award for voicing Genie in “Aladdin” (1992).
Recent AI-generated videos featuring Williams have surfaced online, showcasing him in various scenarios like podcasts, stand-up comedy routines, pep talks, and even commenting on the dinosaurs in “Jurassic Park.” Many of these videos were produced using the Sora app from OpenAI. However, OpenAI discontinued the Sora app in March due to backlash from families of public figures, including the Williams family, who were disturbed by the misuse of AI technology to create inappropriate content.
Zelda Williams, an actor and director, has consistently condemned the use of AI to recreate her father, urging fans to refrain from sending her such videos. She emphasized that the revival of her father’s Instagram account is a proactive measure against the misuse of AI technology to exploit his likeness.
While some individuals like actor Matthew Lawrence have expressed interest in utilizing AI to bring Williams’ voice back, they stress the importance of obtaining proper authorization from the Williams family before proceeding. Similarly, figures such as Bernice King have also spoken out against the unauthorized use of AI to replicate their loved ones.
