“Reviving Family Tradition: Dining on the Floor Unites Generations”

This opinion piece is authored by Isma Ishtiaq, a resident of Delta, B.C. For more details on CBC’s First Person narratives, please visit the FAQ.

Reminiscing about cherished childhood moments, one of the fondest memories I hold dear is of family gatherings seated comfortably on a small beige mat. The setting sun often bathed the room in a gentle amber light seeping through the curtains. Our meals were a feast of Pakistani delights; a fragrant pot of biryani, saffron glistening, or perhaps a rich butter chicken paired with freshly made naan. Encircled, we passed dishes, exchanged tales, and recounted the highlights of our day. This tradition, passed down from my father’s lively upbringing in Lahore to our peaceful abode in north Delta, was a treasured link across generations.

My father stressed that beyond nourishment, sharing a meal on the ground instilled humility and gratitude for the sustenance bestowed upon us. Sitting on that humble mat, I realized it was a symbol of the familial ties that bound us and a tribute to our heritage transcending time.

As the years flew by, the busyness of life engulfed my siblings and me, eroding the cherished family dinners. Work, school, and sports consumed our schedules, and over a decade elapsed since we last gathered on that familiar mat.

It took a Thanksgiving dinner, when I turned 23, to revive the tradition of dining on the floor. Inviting my friends of diverse backgrounds to join my family for Thanksgiving, I introduced them to this unique practice. With curiosity piqued, my friends eagerly agreed to partake in this ritual. Retrieving the worn-out beige mat from storage, we recreated the nostalgic circle on the living room floor, enjoying Thanksgiving turkey together.

The evening unfolded beautifully. My father, seated at the dining table, observed with a smile and eventually joined us on the ground, elucidating the tradition to my friends as the other parents observed inquisitively. Most of my friends found the experience delightful, with one likening it to a cozy campfire gathering!
