“Racing Community Mourns Loss of Rising Star Jockey Tommie Jakes, 19”

The racing community is in sorrow following the untimely passing of apprentice jockey Tommie Jakes, who tragically died at the age of 19.

In a joint statement released by the Injured Jockeys’ Fund and Professional Jockeys Association, it was conveyed that Tommie Jakes, a licensed apprentice jockey, passed away at his residence near Newmarket. Described as a beloved son, brother, and a valued member of George Boughey’s racing team, Tommie’s family requested privacy during this difficult period.

Despite having recently ridden at Nottingham, Jakes was scheduled to ride for trainer Ismail Mohammed at Chelmsford. Known as a rising talent in the jockey community, the young rider had achieved 59 wins from 519 appearances since 2023, with his first victory as an apprentice coming at Lingfield aboard Jane Chapple-Hyam’s Suzi’s Connoisseur.

Having a background in racing, Tommie Jakes followed in his father’s footsteps and forged a successful career in the sport. His final win was aboard Boughey’s horse Fouroneohfever at Catterick. Recognized for his horsemanship and dedication, Jakes had earned praise from trainers and was seen as a promising rider with a bright future.

Brant Dunshea, the acting chief executive of the British Horseracing Authority, expressed deep sorrow over Jakes’s passing, highlighting his talent and the impact he had made in the racing community. Support and counseling services have been made available to those affected by the loss, with tributes planned at upcoming race meetings in memory of Tommie Jakes.

The George Boughey team also shared their grief through a social media post, honoring Tommie as a valuable and cherished member of their team. The IJF and PJA reiterated that support is accessible through various helplines for individuals needing assistance during this challenging time.
