“Next Tests AI Scanners to Detect Stolen Items in Undergarments”

Next is currently testing advanced AI scanners capable of identifying stolen items concealed within undergarments such as bras and underwear. This cutting-edge technology operates by detecting changes in body heat and has the ability to uncover hidden weapons, explosives, cash, and drugs.

The “Thruvision Passive Terahertz Screening System” has undergone successful trials at Next UK warehouses and distribution centers and may soon be implemented in retail stores. Steve Teatum, the Head of Group Loss Prevention at Next, discussed the innovative system on a recent episode of the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast.

Teatum explained how the technology has exposed individuals attempting to conceal items in personal areas, thwarting traditional security measures. The system has proven highly effective in preventing theft through this method.

Recent statistics reveal a significant increase in shoplifting incidents in England and Wales, reaching a record high in more than two decades. In response to rising retail crime, Home Bargains has deployed AI cameras to detect theft at self-checkouts by identifying unscanned items. These cameras alert staff to discrepancies in scanned items, helping to mitigate theft incidents.

Paul Rowland, operations director at Home Bargains, expressed that the technology has outperformed traditional security measures in combating theft. This initiative aims to curb shoplifting in light of the surge in retail crime, with Home Bargains also introducing a confidential hotline for customers to report incidents of theft and crime at their stores.
