“Mother’s Tongue ‘Spider Web’ Leads to Half Removed”

A mother discovered a peculiar “spider web” patch on her tongue, which eventually led to the removal of half of her tongue after doctors dismissed her symptoms for nearly twenty years.

Sharon Moreby, a 54-year-old resident of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, first noticed the mark while brushing her teeth two decades ago. Initially unconcerned, she grew worried after reading an article in a newspaper. Despite undergoing eight biopsies and laser treatment on the left side of her tongue, medical professionals assured her everything was fine.

During the period preceding her diagnosis, she was told the issue might have been from tongue biting or menopause. However, additional symptoms emerged over time, including earache, jaw pain, swallowing difficulties, and an unexplained lump on her neck. Following a final biopsy in August 2023, her fears were confirmed.

Subsequently, Sharon underwent a lengthy surgery lasting nine-and-a-half hours to remove the left side of her tongue, along with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, as doctors discovered the cancer had spread to her lymph nodes. Recounting her experience, she mentioned noticing a small white patch resembling a spider web on her tongue while brushing her teeth, which initially did not alarm her. However, as the years passed, the patch grew, leading to multiple biopsies and a misdiagnosis of dysplasia.

Despite worsening symptoms over a decade, Sharon claimed healthcare providers consistently overlooked her concerns. She eventually sought another biopsy after experiencing severe pain, earache, jaw discomfort, and a neck lump. The biopsy confirmed tongue cancer.

Following the diagnosis, Sharon underwent a neck dissection to eliminate the cancer from her mouth, followed by a tongue reconstruction using tissue from her arm. She is now in remission but feels disappointed by the medical system after struggling for years to obtain a correct diagnosis.

Expressing her frustration, she stated that all her previous biopsies came back clear, highlighting the crucial role of persistence in advocating for one’s health. Sharon advised others to trust their instincts and persist in seeking answers from medical professionals.
