Intriguing Discovery: African Tortoise Found Far from Home
A surprising encounter unfolded at Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake when Molly, an African spurred tortoise, was spotted wandering at an unusually slow pace in the wetland. The staff, including Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter, were astonished by the unexpected presence of the 36-kilogram tortoise, a species native to the Sahara desert, not the Canadian prairie.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, which were initially dismissed as mistaken identifications of local snapping turtles, a confirmed sighting on the iNaturalist app prompted Malchuk and her team to embark on a tortoise search. To their amazement, they quickly located Molly, who stood out for her massive size.
Upon discovering her, the Oak Hammock staff provided Molly with care, offering her cucumbers and flower petals while giving her guided tours of the marsh. Eventually, they identified Molly’s family through a social media post and reunited her with her owners on July 22.
Reflecting on Molly’s adventure, Malchuk speculated that the tortoise might have escaped through a gap in the family’s backyard fence during renovations. The puzzling question remains: how did Molly manage to travel about 20 kilometers to the marsh from her home?
One theory suggests that a well-intentioned passerby may have misguidedly believed that Molly belonged in a wetland environment, jeopardizing her safety. Despite the uncertainties surrounding her journey, Molly’s safe return home marked the end of her unexpected escapade.
The staff at Oak Hammock Marsh marveled at Molly’s resilience and determination throughout her mysterious trek, highlighting the curious tale of a tortoise far from her natural habitat.
