“Labour Urged to Reject Blame on Immigration, Embrace Unity”

Labour should not accept the idea that immigration is the root cause of all issues in Britain, according to Lucy Powell. The deputy leader hopeful called on Labour to reclaim the narrative from those who seek to sow division in the country, emphasizing the heightened responsibility while in power.

Powell made these remarks at a screening of the Mirror’s new YouTube series, Island of Strangers, where Real Britain’s Ros Wynne Jones delves into bridging societal divides. The series title alludes to language used by the Prime Minister in a speech on immigration, a stance he now expresses regret over.

During the Labour conference in Liverpool, Powell stressed the party’s historical role in combating division and hatred, asserting that Labour must tackle the misconception that immigration is solely to blame for societal challenges. She underlined the need for Labour to lead efforts in uniting people and addressing the country’s issues.

The Island of Strangers series can be viewed on YouTube, with new episodes premiering every Friday. Ms. Wynne-Jones echoed Powell’s sentiments, expressing understanding for people’s frustrations but highlighting the misplaced nature of their anger.

Addressing the audience, Ms. Powell emphasized that preventing immigration will not alleviate the challenges faced by communities. She called for a redefinition of patriotism, portraying the nation not as a collection of strangers but as a community of neighbors striving for unity.
