Former Celebrity Big Brother contestant JoJo Siwa has opened up about her sexuality in relation to her partner, Chris Hughes, and the backlash they have faced. JoJo, 22, initially came out as pansexual as a teenager, later identifying as a lesbian before embracing the label of queer. She is currently in a relationship with Chris, 32, whom she met while on the Big Brother show in April.
Despite being in a heterosexual relationship with Chris, JoJo has faced criticism and disbelief from some within the LGBTQ+ community who now perceive her as straight. Addressing these reactions on a radio show, JoJo emphasized that being in a heterosexual relationship does not alter her sexual orientation and reaffirmed her support for the LGBTQ+ community.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s Smith Sisters Live, JoJo clarified that her current relationship does not define her as straight, highlighting her past romantic experiences with women and non-binary individuals. She shared that her first love was with a woman who was her best friend, and she has also been in relationships with women and non-binary individuals before being with Chris.
Discussing her deep connection with Chris, JoJo expressed that she has never experienced a love like theirs before and described him as the best thing that has ever happened to her. In a podcast interview, JoJo reflected on the challenges of navigating her sexuality and relationship dynamics, mentioning the mixed reactions from her family and the LGBTQ+ community.
JoJo emphasized the importance of embracing love in all its forms within the LGBTQ+ spectrum and emphasized that being in a heterosexual relationship does not negate her past experiences or her identity. She described herself as happy and identified with the term queer for its inclusivity and flexibility, acknowledging that some may also categorize her as bisexual.
Moving away from strict labels, JoJo emphasized the fluidity of her identity and expressed relief in not fixating on categorizations. She concluded by underscoring the diversity and acceptance within the LGBTQ+ community, reiterating the mantra that “love is love” in all its manifestations.
