Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to retaliate following a move by Western nations, including the UK, to acknowledge Palestinian statehood. This declaration came after Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, attending the United Nations General Assembly in New York, cautioned Israel against expanding settlements in the West Bank in response to the recognition of Palestine.
Cooper emphasized that the decision to recognize Palestine aimed to enhance security by preserving the possibility of a two-state solution. The UK, along with Canada, Australia, and Portugal, took a symbolic step in acknowledging Palestine on Sunday.
In the face of the expected additional recognitions at the General Assembly, Netanyahu, who was also present at the UN, expressed strong opposition. He stated that a Palestinian state would not be established and warned of a forceful response upon his return from the United States.
President Emmanuel Macron is anticipated to confirm France’s recognition of Palestinian statehood at a high-level conference co-hosted with Saudi Arabia at the UN. Concerns have been raised that Israel might accelerate settlement construction in the West Bank, a territory crucial for a potential Palestinian state. Ms. Cooper reiterated the UK’s stance, urging Israel not to proceed with such actions.
During the UN General Assembly, the UK will advocate for international support for a framework for peace in the Middle East following its recognition of a Palestinian state. Cooper aims to reinforce the international consensus on the peace process in the region.
Cooper will also participate in a Security Council meeting focusing on global security threats, particularly Russia’s recent airspace violations over NATO allies. The UK’s commitment to Ukraine’s security will be reaffirmed during the assembly.
Cooper highlighted the significance of UK diplomacy in addressing global challenges, such as the conflicts in Gaza, Ukraine, and Sudan, high levels of migration, and climate change impacts. She stressed the importance of proactive international engagement in achieving security and prosperity domestically.
