Former cricket legend Ian Botham recently made over £225,000 by auctioning off his cherished collection from the iconic 1981 Ashes series. The renowned England cricketer sold more than 240 items from his illustrious career at an auction held in 2023.
As England aims to stage a comeback in the current Ashes series, fans are hopeful that the team can draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes triumph over four decades ago. During the auction two years back at the Long Room in the KIA Oval, Botham bid farewell to some notable items from his Ashes victory.
Among the items sold, the red cricket ball used by Botham to claim five wickets for one run at Edgbaston fetched £20,000. Additionally, a stump extracted by Botham after the famous Headingley win went for £11,000, while his personal man of the match medal was sold for £19,000.
The Headingley victory in 1981 marked a turning point for the England team, with odds of 500/1 against them for a win. Botham’s remarkable 149 not out set a target of 130 for the visitors, and Bob Willis’s eight wickets secured one of cricket’s greatest comebacks.
Botham personally marked the famed ‘Headingley 81’ stump. Other items sold included a stump from the Edgbaston win, his player of the season medal for £8,000, his England test blazer for £1,800, and a Somerset cap for £2,700. Additionally, a ‘baggy green’ cap gifted by former Australian captain Allan Border fetched £13,000.
Notable sales also included Botham’s England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup in Australia for £11,000 and his BBC SPOTY Lifetime award for £3,600. The decision to auction off his collection was reportedly driven by Botham’s desire to downsize, as mentioned by auctioneer Tim Knight from Knight’s Auctioneers of Norwich, Norfolk.
Knight highlighted the significance of Botham’s legacy, particularly the items linked to the 1981 Ashes series, known as Botham’s Ashes. He noted Botham’s status as one of cricket’s finest players and England’s premier all-rounder, emphasizing his outstanding statistics, on-field charisma, and unwavering determination.
