“Government Aims to Halve Violence Against Women in Decade”

Halving the incidence of violence against women and girls within a decade necessitates a significant shift in societal norms, according to a government official. Home Office Minister Alex Davies-Jones emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of women and girls in all government initiatives, citing the bravery of victims as a driving force behind her work.

During the Labour party conference in Liverpool, Davies-Jones expressed her admiration for survivors of sexual and domestic violence, describing her interactions with them as both a privilege and a source of inspiration. She stressed the need for a collective effort across all government departments, including Education, Health, Housing, and the Department for Work and Pensions, to ensure the safety of women and girls in the country.

The minister emphasized the significance of a cultural shift and strong leadership in combating violence against women and girls, highlighting the importance of public support. The government’s strategy includes enacting policies such as Raneem’s Law, which involves placing domestic abuse specialists in emergency call centers, addressing issues like spiking, deep fake pornography, and ensuring transparency when sexual offenders change their identities.

Last year, Keir Starmer pledged to halve Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) within a decade upon assuming office. Recent data revealed that nearly 2% of adults in England and Wales experienced sexual assault in a year, with approximately 900,000 individuals over the age of 16 affected. Additionally, one in eight women encountered domestic abuse, sexual assault, or stalking during the same period.

Davies-Jones commended the remarkable women she met, expressing how their resilience fuels her determination to make a difference. She acknowledged the emotional challenges but emphasized the empowering and inspiring nature of her work in advocating for improved measures against violence targeting women and girls.
