“From Struggle to Serenity: Caitlyn Moony’s Vancouver Journey”

Caitlyn Moony shares her journey of moving to Vancouver in hopes of making it her permanent residence. Coming from Johannesburg in 2018, Moony had high expectations based on Vancouver’s reputation as one of the top cities to live in. However, her initial excitement faded as she struggled to find a sense of belonging in the city.

Despite the stunning natural beauty of Vancouver, Moony faced challenges such as a lack of professional networks and the elusive “Canadian experience” required by many job opportunities. Working long hours at a startup for minimal pay and residing in a cramped basement apartment added to her disillusionment with the city.

Feeling isolated and longing for a sense of community, Moony found it difficult to connect with people in Vancouver. The rainy weather, limited social interactions, and a sense of loneliness made her question her decision to move there. These feelings intensified during the pandemic, prompting her to eventually leave for London, where she found a vibrant and bustling environment more to her liking.

However, Moony realized that despite the initial difficulties, Vancouver had quietly shaped her into a more introspective and content individual. The city’s calmness and serenity offered her the opportunity to reflect and grow in ways she hadn’t anticipated. In the end, she acknowledges Vancouver’s imperfections but expresses a desire to return, seeking a quieter yet fulfilling life in the city she once struggled to embrace.
