Former F1 Driver Andrea de Adamich Passes at 84

Italian former Formula 1 driver Andrea de Adamich has passed away at the age of 84. De Adamich, who competed for McLaren and Ferrari, participated in 34 World Championship Grand Prix races during his career.

His F1 journey came to an abrupt end after a significant 10-car crash during the 1973 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, resulting in a broken ankle and other leg injuries. Despite this setback, he transitioned into broadcasting, becoming a well-known commentator and TV expert known for his willingness to engage in on-air debates.

De Adamich’s television career flourished as he hosted the program “Grand Prix” on Italia 1 from 1978 until 2012. In recognition of his contributions, he was honored as a Commendatore of the Order of Merit in 2022, a prestigious civilian accolade in Italy.

Born in Trieste, De Adamich initially gained recognition by winning the Italian Formula 3 championship in 1965 before joining Alfa Romeo. Throughout his racing tenure, he achieved success in endurance competitions alongside notable figures like Piers Courage, Henri Pescarolo, and others.

Among his notable victories were the 200 Miles of Buenos Aires in 1970, the 1000 KM of Brands Hatch, and the Six Hours of Watkins Glen in 1971. In his final season in 1974, he secured podium finishes in all four 1000 km races he entered.

Although he also participated in Le Mans, finishing fourth in 1972, De Adamich’s impact in television broadcasting garnered widespread acclaim. Tributes poured in following his passing, with fans expressing gratitude for his professionalism and passion for the sport.

One social media user fondly recalled De Adamich’s influence on their youth, while another lamented his untimely departure and the loss of a skilled professional. A further tribute hailed De Adamich as a “true gentleman of the races,” emphasizing his multifaceted contributions as a driver, instructor, communicator, and pundit.
