Eland Cables, a company specializing in supplying electrical cables for major infrastructure projects, has made an early move to increase the Real Living Wage for its employees. This pay boost is set to support the staff ahead of the upcoming holiday season, with workers expressing gratitude for the additional income.
The Real Living Wage, a voluntary hourly pay rate designed for employees aged 18 and above working for Living Wage Foundation-certified employers, is calculated based on the cost of essential living expenses like food, clothing, and household bills. The new hourly rates will see an increase of 6.7% to £13.45 per hour and 6.9% to £14.80 per hour in London, surpassing the statutory minimum wage.
Eland Cables has taken the initiative to implement the higher Real Living Wage rates earlier than the deadline of May 2026, benefiting hundreds of employees like Ben, a 34-year-old father-of-two from Doncaster. Ben and his colleagues appreciate the company’s decision, acknowledging the positive impact it will have on their general living expenses, especially with Christmas approaching.
JS Pelland, the executive director of Eland Cables, emphasized that the early adoption of the increased Real Living Wage aligns with the company’s values of fairness, loyalty, and long-term success. He highlighted the importance of treating employees well, leading to higher engagement, pride in work, and improved outcomes for all.
Eland Cables has seen significant improvements in staff retention, reduced sickness absence, and increased productivity since becoming a Living Wage signatory in 2021. The company’s commitment to internal promotion and career development has allowed employees to progress within the organization, fostering a sense of belonging and dedication among the workforce.
Overall, the decision to implement the enhanced Real Living Wage early reflects Eland Cables’ dedication to valuing and investing in its employees, resulting in a more motivated and committed team driving the company’s growth and success.
