Cristiano Ronaldo has hinted that the current season in the Saudi Pro League could mark the end of his illustrious career. The 41-year-old football icon, who joined Al-Nassr in December 2022 on a contract set to expire next June, shared with Vogue magazine that he is unlikely to continue playing beyond this season.
“This is probably my last year of football, and I want to leave a spectacular legacy,” Ronaldo stated. The Portuguese forward, boasting an impressive 976 career goals, recently tied the knot with his long-time partner, Georgina Rodriguez.
Ronaldo expressed his future plans, mentioning his diverse interests and activities outside of football that will keep him occupied. He emphasized the importance of filling the void that football’s absence may create by engaging in various pursuits such as traveling, playing padel, and enjoying the fruits of his hard-earned success over the past 25 years.
The ongoing 2026-27 SPL season marks Ronaldo’s 25th year in professional football. His remarkable career includes winning five Ballon d’Or awards and five UEFA Champions League titles. Notably, Ronaldo’s stellar performance last season, contributing 28 league goals, led Al-Nassr to clinch the Saudi Arabian championship in May, marking his first title with the club since his arrival in Riyadh and the club’s first league victory since 2019.
Following his recent wedding, Ronaldo missed Al-Nassr’s season opener as defending champions, observing from the sidelines during their 3-0 victory against Al-Fateh. Coach Ange Postecoglou highlighted Ronaldo’s presence and support for the team.
Looking ahead, Ronaldo may feature in the upcoming King’s Cup match against Al-Diriyah on Tuesday. Postecoglou emphasized the importance of recovery, given the tight schedule following the previous game.
Ronaldo’s reflections on potential retirement coincided with rival Lionel Messi’s recent statement regarding uncertainties about his future in football following his father’s passing. Messi, aged 39, expressed uncertainties about continuing to play the sport he once solely focused on.
