Cricket legend Robin Smith dies at 62

England’s cricket icon, Robin Smith, has passed away at the age of 62 while in Australia for the Ashes series. The former batsman, renowned for his elegant style and courage, represented his country in 62 Test matches. His close friend and ex-teammate, Kevan James, shared the heartbreaking news during an interview with BBC Radio Solent.

Despite battling health issues, including alcoholism and depression, the exact cause of Smith’s death remains undisclosed. During his illustrious career, Smith achieved significant milestones, such as scoring two centuries in the Ashes series and recording a highest Test score of 175 against the West Indies.

Apart from his Test achievements, Smith also excelled in one-day internationals, contributing to England’s journey to the World Cup final in 1992. His remarkable innings of 167 not out against Australia in 1993 stood as the highest ODI score by an English player until 2016.

Following his retirement from international cricket in 1996, Smith continued playing for Hampshire until 2003, earning a reputation as one of the county’s finest players. However, his post-retirement life was marred by struggles with alcoholism and depression, leading to multiple relapses.

In a recent interview with The Times, Smith candidly discussed his ongoing battle with alcohol and mental health issues, emphasizing the importance of seeking help and opening up to friends during difficult times. Despite facing numerous challenges, Smith’s legacy as a talented cricketer and his bravery in confronting personal demons will be remembered by cricket enthusiasts worldwide.
