Keir Starmer has expressed confidence in the Government’s efforts to reverse the trend of pub closures by empowering communities to rescue struggling pubs.
Under a new initiative aimed at revitalizing struggling high streets, individuals will be granted the opportunity to purchase cherished local assets like pubs. The timeline for raising funds will be extended from six to 12 months to allow communities more time to gather the necessary resources.
This development is a victory for the campaign to safeguard Britain’s pubs, as many establishments are facing financial challenges. The Mirror has been advocating for increased support for communities to acquire their local pubs and has called on ministers to establish a fund to assist struggling pubs.
Speaking to the Mirror, Mr. Starmer emphasized the importance of local pubs in British culture, noting the alarming rate at which these establishments are closing down. He affirmed the Government’s commitment to granting communities enhanced authority to save and rejuvenate British pubs.
The Prime Minister is anticipated to introduce a new “Pride in Place” program to support communities in rejuvenating their high streets. Councils may have the ability to reject unwanted establishments like betting shops, vape stores, and fake barbers, while communities will be empowered to take over vacant shops and dilapidated businesses through compulsory purchase orders.
Additionally, local residents will have the opportunity to purchase beloved venues such as pubs, tennis courts, and parks to facilitate their revitalization through the community right to buy initiative.
Communities Secretary Steve Reed emphasized the challenges faced by communities observing the decline of their neighborhoods. He praised the resilience of communities and highlighted the Government’s commitment to empowering local residents to lead the restoration of pride in their areas.
By placing decision-making power in the hands of local communities, the Government aims to promote community cohesion and rejuvenation, fostering a sense of national unity through community-led renewal efforts.
