“Cabinet Minister Rebuts Trump’s Claim on London Sharia Law”

Cabinet minister Pat McFadden has refuted Donald Trump’s assertion that London desires sharia law, labeling it as a misunderstanding of the city. The remarks from Keir Starmer’s key minister followed the US President’s renewed criticism of London Mayor, Sadiq Khan.

During his speech at the UN General Assembly, President Trump criticized the Mayor, stating, “I look at London, where you have a terrible mayor, terrible terrible mayor, and it’s been so changed, so changed.” Trump further insinuated, “Now they want to go to sharia law.”

In response, McFadden emphasized the presence of British law in South London, highlighting the city’s significance as a major asset to the UK. Dismissing Trump’s comments, he expressed pride in London as the capital city and underscored its economic and creative contributions.

A spokesperson for Sadiq Khan dismissed Trump’s remarks as bigoted and refused to engage further. Health Secretary Wes Streeting defended the Mayor’s inclusive approach and focused initiatives on enhancing various aspects of the city.

Labour MPs stood in support of Sadiq Khan, with Dame Emily Thornberry praising his progressive values and denouncing allegations of promoting sharia law in London. Rupa Huq and Rosena Allin-Khan condemned Trump’s statements as falsehoods and called for diplomatic action in response.

The reaffirmation of London’s diversity and rejection of discriminatory rhetoric echoed across political circles, emphasizing the city’s global reputation and leadership under Mayor Sadiq Khan.
