Brazilian Restaurant Tragedy: Cook Killed in Floor Collapse

A tragic incident occurred at a renowned Brazilian restaurant where a cook lost her life after a floor collapse trapped her along with five others in the rubble. The victim, SuĂȘnia Maria TomĂ© Bezerra, aged 51, was working at the Jamile restaurant in Sao Paulo when the accident happened. Despite efforts by paramedics, she succumbed to her injuries while being stuck in the debris. Fortunately, five individuals were rescued alive from the collapsed area.

The restaurant, owned by chef Henrique Fogaca, known for his role as a judge on the Brazilian ‘Masterchef’ show, is currently under investigation to determine the cause of the structural failure. Colleagues and friends of Ms. Bezerra expressed their grief on social media, remembering her warm smile and personality.

Originally from Paraiba in Monteiro, SuĂȘnia had a cake business before moving to Sao Paulo to be closer to her son studying medicine. Her brother, who also worked at the restaurant, was not present during the collapse. Situated in the Bixiga neighborhood, known for its Italian roots, Jamile occupies three floors. Chef Fogaca expressed his sadness over the tragic event and extended his support to the victims and their families.

Initially suspected to be a result of a gas leak, investigations have ruled out this possibility. ComgĂĄs, the gas distributor in the area, confirmed that there was no connection between the gas and the structural collapse. The company is cooperating with authorities to determine the root cause of the incident.

Despite the heartbreaking loss, the restaurant is focused on assisting those affected and ensuring their well-being. Chef Fogaca, even while out of the country, is actively involved in overseeing the situation and supporting the investigation process in collaboration with relevant authorities.
