“Braintree Couple Slashes Heating Costs with Innovative Energy System”

A Braintree couple, Terrence, 76, and Lesley Bridges, 75, have successfully reduced their monthly heating costs to just £40 by participating in a new energy scheme trial. Instead of using a traditional gas boiler, they now utilize a unique system consisting of over 500 computer banks housed in their shed. This innovative setup generates heat, which is then channeled into their hot water system.

Formerly spending £375 monthly to heat their two-bedroom bungalow, the Bridges now enjoy significantly reduced bills ranging between £40 and £70. The couple, residing in their bungalow for three years, had the data center installed in December 2024.

Mr. Bridges, a retired RAF sergeant, expressed relief at the newfound affordability of heating, stating that it alleviates his concerns about turning up the heat. The couple’s decision to adopt this technology has been beneficial, especially for Lesley, who suffers from spinal stenosis that worsens in cold weather.

The HeatHub data center, developed by Thermify, is part of UK Power Networks’ SHIELD project, aimed at assisting low-income households in transitioning to net zero energy. Mr. Bridges commended the initiative, highlighting the added installation of solar panels on their roof.

The compact size and efficiency of the data center in their shed have impressed Mr. Bridges, who emphasized the system’s ability to evenly heat their entire home without cold spots. Encouraged by their positive experience, he recommends the technology to others and eagerly anticipates its future expansion.

Thermify’s CEO, Travis Theune, emphasized the company’s commitment to providing clean and affordable energy solutions, aiming to combat fuel poverty in the UK. The data center technology has proven effective in reducing carbon emissions and lowering heating costs, as demonstrated in the Bridges’ home trial.

The positive outcomes of the trial have prompted plans to extend the project to an additional 50 homes in the near future. The collaborative efforts of partners like Eastlight Community Homes and UK Power Networks aim to make homes more energy-efficient, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly for residents.

The ambitious SHIELD project, supported by Ofgem’s Strategic Innovation Fund, seeks to expand its impact to benefit more households annually, contributing to a sustainable and greener future for the UK.
