Virgin Media O2 users are being cautioned about a fraudulent email circulating in the UK following the closure of O2’s 3G mobile platform. This outdated technology has been replaced by faster 4G and 5G services. While most customers are unaffected by this change, scammers are taking advantage of the situation.
The deceptive email, falsely claiming to be from Virgin Media O2, prompts users to upgrade their SIM card due to the 3G shutdown. The subject line of the email reads “Alert: Switch to Your New 5G SIM for a Faster, Stronger Network.” Despite its official appearance, Virgin Media O2 emphasizes that these emails are not legitimate and should be deleted without clicking on any links or responding.
This phishing scam aims to trick recipients into sharing personal information. In some cases, scammers may even send a SIM card and request users to enter a four-digit PIN. The email also directs users to log in to the O2 app with a provided password and includes a deceptive “Contact Us” button that could lead victims directly to the fraudsters.
If successful, scammers could access private accounts, gather personal data for identity theft, or disrupt financial security. To stay safe, it is recommended to ignore suspicious emails from service providers and reach out to the company directly using official channels. Seeking advice from a trusted source before taking any action is also advisable.
