“Aldi Named UK’s Most Affordable Supermarket for 5th Year”

Aldi has been recognized as the most affordable supermarket in 2025 by consumer advocacy group Which?. Which? monitors grocery prices daily and discloses the least expensive stores monthly. Aldi claimed the top spot as the cheapest supermarket in ten out of 12 months in 2025, solidifying its status as the UK’s most economical supermarket for the fifth consecutive year.

In December, Aldi emerged as the most budget-friendly supermarket for a selection of 68 items, averaging £123.60 for the month. Following closely behind, Lidl ranked second, costing just 10p more in December with an average expenditure of £123.70 for both Lidl Plus members and non-members.

Last year, Lidl held the title of the cheapest supermarket twice, in July and October, with a mere 77p difference in average monthly prices compared to Aldi. For the same set of 68 items at Asda, the mean cost in December was £134.89, while Tesco Clubcard holders spent £135.84 or £139.12 without a Clubcard.

Meanwhile, customers with Sainsbury’s Nectar cards spent £141.45 or £143.74 without one. Waitrose stood as the priciest supermarket for the 68-item list, totaling £170.46 in December. Which? research unveiled that on average, Waitrose was 35% more expensive than Aldi throughout 2025. Comparatively, a larger weekly shop of 180 items depicted Asda as the most cost-effective supermarket in December, with an average bill of £450.82.

Tesco Clubcard members spent an average of £462 in December for the same items, while non-Clubcard holders paid £493.53. Morrisons customers had a bill of £466.04 with a loyalty discount or £467.46 without one. Sainsbury’s Nectar cardholders would have spent £468.61, and non-members would have paid £501.89.

For the larger shopping list, Waitrose retained its position as the most expensive supermarket, with an average bill of £529.17. The analysis by Which? includes special offers and loyalty prices but excludes multibuys.

Reena Sewraz, Which? Retail Editor, commented, “Aldi’s consistent performance highlights why it has been named the UK’s most affordable supermarket for the fifth consecutive year. Lidl remains a strong competitor among discounters, offering competitive prices, but Aldi consistently maintained the lowest prices overall.”

She added, “Asda remains a favorable choice for shoppers seeking a wider range of branded products at competitive prices. With food expenses remaining a significant concern for many households, it is prudent to explore options as selecting one supermarket over another could result in substantial savings annually.”
