“Calgary Flames Mourn Passing of Radio Icon Peter Maher”

Calgary Flames radio broadcasting icon, Peter Maher, has passed away at the age of 79. His death was confirmed on Thursday. Maher served as the play-by-play announcer for the Flames’ radio broadcasts for 33 consecutive seasons starting in 1980. Throughout his illustrious career, which included the Flames’ Stanley Cup victory in 1989 and their 2004 finals appearance, Maher was renowned for his fervor and signature catchphrases like “Yeah, baby!” and “You can put it in the win column!”

Following his retirement at the end of the 2013-14 NHL season, the Flames expressed their condolences to Maher’s loved ones and fans, acknowledging his voice as an integral part of the Flames fan experience. Born in Campbellton, New Brunswick, Maher previously called Toronto Maple Leafs games before joining the Flames in 1980 when the team relocated from Atlanta.

Rob Kerr, Maher’s longtime colleague in the Saddledome press box, lamented Maher’s passing, emphasizing his dedication to the craft and the Flames fan base. Kerr described Maher as a master storyteller of Flames history and a meticulous broadcaster who always prioritized accuracy and authenticity in his work.

Maher’s broadcasting achievements extended beyond the Flames, as he also covered six NHL All-Star games, the 2005 IIHF World Championship, and the Canadian men’s hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics, including Sidney Crosby’s iconic “Golden Goal.” Inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2006, Maher was honored with the Foster Hewitt Memorial Award for his exceptional contributions as an NHL broadcaster.

In recognition of his legacy, Maher’s name was immortalized in the Scotiabank Saddledome’s broadcast booth following his retirement in 2014. Additionally, an annual award named after Maher is presented by local Calgary media to the Flames player exemplifying sincerity, integrity, dedication, and respect.

The Calgary Flames community mourns the loss of a broadcasting legend whose voice will forever echo in the hearts of Flames fans.
