Renowned artist Yayoi Kusama captivated the global audience with her distinctive artistic vision, often characterized by covering her artworks in an endless array of polka dots. Kusama, a highly esteemed figure in Japan’s contemporary art scene, passed away at the age of 97 in a Tokyo hospital, as confirmed by her studio.

Her artistic legacy has transcended borders, with exhibitions of her work showcased in prestigious venues worldwide, including the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, as well as the Museum Ludwig in Germany.

Among her most iconic creations are the mesmerizing Infinity Mirror Rooms installations, drawing long queues of admirers at renowned museums. Notably, Toronto’s Art Gallery of Ontario hosted the Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors exhibition in 2018, which garnered significant public interest, leading to the gallery’s acquisition of the permanent installation, Infinity Mirrored Room — Let’s Survive Forever, with community backing.

Recognizable by her signature orange bob wig, Kusama’s art is distinguished by repetitive psychedelic motifs such as vibrant swirls, nets, and, most notably, polka dots, luminous spheres, or light dots.

Throughout her career, Kusama’s avant-garde style and boundary-pushing artworks sparked public discourse, despite facing mental health challenges and periodic institutionalization. Born in 1929 in Matsumoto, Japan, she relocated to the United States in 1957 to pursue her artistic endeavors.

In addition to her visual artistry, Kusama delved into various mediums, including filmmaking and writing novels. She maintained an air of mystery around her creative process, often surprising even herself with the outcomes of her work.

Fashion houses took notice of Kusama’s rising prominence, leading to collaborations with brands like Louis Vuitton in 2012 under then-creative director Marc Jacobs. Her artistic imprint extended to licensed products, featuring her distinctive illustrations on a range of items, from teacups to T-shirts.
