This success has positioned ‘Obsession’ as the highest-grossing original movie in the post-pandemic era, surpassing Pixar’s ‘Elemental.’ Remarkably, ‘Obsession,’ produced with a budget of only $750,000, now holds the title of the highest-grossing film made for less than $1 million, outperforming the iconic ‘Enter the Dragon.’
Written and directed by 26-year-old Curry Barker, ‘Obsession’ saw a steady increase in weekly grosses during its initial three weeks in theaters, a feat not seen since ‘E.T.’ The film’s domestic earnings reached $263.4 million by the end of its U.S. theatrical run, with an additional $238.1 million from international markets, bringing its total worldwide earnings to over $501.5 million. With an upcoming release in South Korea, the film’s success is expected to continue.
‘Obsession’ has also made history as the highest-grossing festival acquisition, following its debut at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film’s commercial triumph has opened doors for its cast, with lead actors Inde Navarette and Michael Johnston landing major roles in upcoming blockbuster films.
The overwhelming success of ‘Obsession’ has set the stage for Barker’s next project, a horror film titled ‘Anything but Ghosts,’ in which he will star alongside co-writer Cooper Tomlinson.
