The leader of the Green Party has advocated for the legalization of all drugs, including Class A substances, emphasizing the need for a “public health approach” to address the issue and combat drug-related criminal activities. Zack Polanski criticized the current war on drugs, labeling it as a failure and calling for a reevaluation of the approach.
Polanski, ahead of his inaugural leader’s speech at the party’s national conference in Bournemouth, highlighted the inefficacy of the existing drug policies. He stressed that the societal costs associated with illegal drug markets and criminal organizations are a result of prolonged neglect by previous Prime Ministers who believed that prohibiting drugs would solve the problem.
In a spirited speech, Polanski criticized the government led by Keir Starmer, accusing them of being out of touch with the public’s needs. He emphasized the Green Party’s commitment to not aligning with ideologies that prioritize corporate interests over public welfare, outlining their vision of “eco-populism” as a beacon of hope in contrast to despair-driven politics.
Regarding climate change, Polanski asserted that the Labour Party has failed to address the issue adequately, indicating a need for a shift in direction. He warned against continuing on the current path of policy stagnation, suggesting that a change in leadership is imperative to prevent the country from falling into the hands of divisive forces.
Polanski proposed practical solutions to pressing issues, such as expanding safe migration routes to address the small boats crisis and implementing a progressive wealth tax to fund essential public services.
