The US military, under the direction of Donald Trump, conducted a strike on suspected drug traffickers, resulting in the death of three individuals referred to as “narcoterrorists.” The specific group targeted and the origin of the vessel struck by the military’s action remain undisclosed. However, according to a statement by President Trump on his Truth Social platform, the targeted vessel was allegedly linked to a designated terrorist organization and engaged in drug trafficking within the USSOUTHCOM region.
USSOUTHCOM, also known as US Southern Command, operates in Latin America below Mexico, the waters adjacent to Central and South America, and the Caribbean Sea. Trump emphasized that intelligence reports confirmed the vessel’s involvement in trafficking illicit narcotics along a well-known drug trafficking route aimed at supplying the US market.
A video shared by Trump depicted the moment of the strike, showing the vessel speeding through the waters before being hit by missiles and sinking in a fiery explosion. White House communications director Steven Cheung remarked that the perpetrators realized their mistake at that instant.
This recent strike follows a previous operation on September 2, where a drug-carrying speedboat, allegedly operated by the Tren de Aragua gang, was targeted, resulting in 11 casualties. The Trump administration defended these military actions as necessary measures to curb the influx of drugs into the United States.
However, concerns have been raised by several senators, including Democrats and some Republicans, as well as human rights organizations, questioning the legality of Trump’s actions. They argue that the use of military forces for law enforcement purposes may exceed executive authority boundaries.
The Trump administration has not elaborated on how the military identified the boat’s cargo or determined the alleged gang affiliation of its passengers before launching the attacks. National security officials disclosed to Congress members that the initial boat was fired upon multiple times after changing its course and appearing to head back to shore.
The strikes come amidst an increase in US maritime presence in the Caribbean, signaling a significant shift in the US approach to combating drug trafficking in the Western Hemisphere. Speculation in Venezuela suggests that these actions may be part of a strategy to destabilize President Nicolás Maduro’s regime, a notion echoed by Maduro himself.
Maduro dismissed the US video released by Trump as artificial intelligence-generated and questioned the possibility of a boat of that size navigating the high seas. He accused the Trump administration of using drug trafficking accusations as a pretext for intimidating and pursuing regime change in Venezuela.
