Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood has criticized pro-Palestine demonstrators as “un-British” for protesting shortly after the Manchester synagogue attack. Mahmood expressed disappointment, describing the protesters’ actions as dishonorable and urged them to show restraint. The attack resulted in the deaths of two individuals, Adrian Daulby, 53, and Melvin Cravitz, 66, with three others sustaining serious injuries.
Following the interception of a Gaza-bound aid flotilla and the detainment of passengers, including activist Greta Thunberg, thousands gathered in London and various UK cities to protest. Mahmood emphasized her disapproval of the protests, labeling the behavior as uncharacteristic of British values and lacking in solidarity with the Jewish community.
Despite ongoing issues driving the protests, Mahmood called for empathy and urged protesters to allow the affected community time to grieve. The Metropolitan Police reported 40 arrests in connection with the protests, which led to clashes with law enforcement near Downing Street and calls for demonstrations at 18 other locations in the UK.
The assailant, identified as terrorist Jihad Al-Shamie, was fatally shot by police after targeting worshippers at the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue on Yom Kippur, the most sacred day in the Jewish calendar. Mahmood reassured the Jewish community of enhanced security measures to enable them to resume their daily routines without fear.
Emphasizing the importance of maintaining normalcy within the Jewish community, Mahmood highlighted the authorities’ commitment to ensuring their safety and security. She encouraged individuals to continue practicing their faith and engaging in communal activities without feeling restricted or fearful, emphasizing a proactive approach towards community safety.
