“Virgin Media O2 to Decommission 2G Network in 2029”

In the United Kingdom, despite the prevalence of fast 4G and 5G networks in new phones, the older 2G technology is still in use. Introduced in 1993, 2G continues to support certain devices like phones, alarms, and health equipment.

However, Virgin Media O2 has announced plans to decommission the 2G network in 2029, following the shutdown of 3G. This move is part of the company’s strategy to modernize its network infrastructure and enhance future connectivity.

While the discontinuation of 2G marks the end of an era, it brings positive outcomes. Virgin Media O2 anticipates that retiring 2G will enable them to focus on expanding and enhancing their 4G and 5G networks. This transition is expected to result in faster speeds, more dependable connections, and reduced energy consumption, meeting consumer demands.

Jeanie York, the Chief Technology Officer at Virgin Media O2, stated, “We are investing £700m this year to upgrade our mobile network and meet the increasing consumer needs. By phasing out the old 2G network, we aim to provide all customers with reliable and efficient 4G and 5G services.”

The company has experience from shutting down their 3G network and is committed to responsibly managing the 2G phase-out without disrupting customers. While most users will not be affected, some businesses may need to prepare for the change.

Virgin Media O2 plans to communicate directly with customers to facilitate the transition as they upgrade from 2G. The scheduled closure in 2029 allows customers and businesses time to prepare and update any devices reliant on 2G technology.

2G, introduced in the UK in 1993, has been a fundamental technology for mobile communication over the years. Offering reliable voice calls and text messaging with broad coverage, 2G has connected people in areas where newer networks were not easily accessible.

Despite the faster data speeds provided by modern networks like 4G and 5G, 2G remains valuable for its reliability, energy efficiency, and extensive coverage. However, as the demand for advanced mobile services grows, Virgin Media O2’s shift away from 2G will enable them to focus on developing the next generation of connectivity.
