“Killer Reveals Movie-Inspired Shooting of Parents”

A disturbed individual has recounted the tragic event in which he fatally shot his father and stepmother. During an interview on photographer Mark Laita’s YouTube channel, Jay Katz disclosed that a 1991 crime movie had influenced his decision to commit the heinous act.

Identified as Jayant Narayan Katz, he mercilessly killed his father Norman and stepmother Michelle R. Filling-Katz at their residence in Burtonsville, Maryland, in 1991. In a recorded confession, Katz described the murders as exhilarating, likening the experience to a game of cat and mouse involving law enforcement.

Diagnosed with manic depression, as revealed by his mother in court documents, Katz spent 23 years incarcerated for two counts of second-degree murder and handgun offenses. Upon his release in 2022, he admitted to feeling suicidal on the day of the tragic incident in August 1991.

Katz, who was 20 at the time of the murders, reflected on the moments leading up to the killings, mentioning a Wesley Snipes movie that had sparked ideas of vigilante justice in his mind. Despite alleging childhood sexual abuse, which remained unproven in court, Katz confessed to taking his stepmother’s revolver and carrying out the brutal act.

Detailing the sequence of events, Katz recounted shooting his stepmother in the hand and face before fatally shooting his father. Showing no remorse, he recalled observing them bleed out in the aftermath. His younger brother discovered the gruesome scene and alerted authorities, implicating Katz in the crime.

Friends of the victims disclosed concerns Norman and Michelle Katz had expressed about their son, noting his mental health struggles. Katz eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of second-degree murder and weapons charges in Montgomery County, receiving a plea deal offering a 100-year sentence, a decision he found extremely challenging.

Released in March 2022 after serving 23 years in prison, Katz expressed the emotional turmoil of both pulling the trigger and accepting the lengthy sentence.
