“Mayor Urges Whistleblowers: Uncover Nuclear Testing Scandal”

Officials have been encouraged to speak out as whistleblowers to bring an end to the enduring scandal in British history. Government employees have been assured that they can utilize the protections of the new Hillsborough Law to disclose the truth regarding radiation experiments on troops before the law takes effect.

The plea was made by Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, at the Labour Party conference, urging all Whitehall personnel to understand the impact of the scandal on veterans and their families. Burnham emphasized the importance of individuals who have knowledge of the truth behind the scandal, particularly those who have worked at the Ministry of Defence or in the armed forces, to come forward and use the provisions of the bill to rectify the injustice.

Highlighting a 40-year campaign by the Mirror on behalf of veterans subjected to Cold War nuclear weapons tests, it was revealed in 2023 that the first evidence of a large-scale blood testing program existed, with results concealed behind national security at the Atomic Weapons Establishment.

Despite the release of thousands of files by ministers, inquiries into the classification of these files remain unanswered, and requests to meet Keir Starmer have been unmet. Burnham expressed concerns at a fringe event about a potential cover-up and the need for a one-year special justice tribunal to uncover the truth and provide rapid justice for the approximately 2,000 surviving veterans.

Campaigners and families of veterans have voiced frustration over the lack of public commitment from officials despite positive private meetings. Steve Purse, who has been seeking his father’s medical records for three years, criticized the perceived empty promises from Labour and the silence regarding meeting requests with the Prime Minister.

Advocates for the veterans have urged for immediate action using the Hillsborough Law to ensure justice for those affected by the nuclear testing scandal.
