Jessica Pegula, known for her substantial wealth in the tennis world, has suggested that Andy Murray may have taken on the role of Novak Djokovic’s coach out of sheer curiosity. Shortly after retiring in the summer of 2024, Murray surprised the tennis community by announcing his decision to coach the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
The collaboration between the two tennis icons began before the Australian Open, where Djokovic reached the semi-finals but had to withdraw due to injury. By May, it was confirmed that their coaching partnership had ended by mutual agreement, just six months after it began.
During an episode of The Players Box podcast with Jennifer Brady, Desirae Krawczyk, and Madison Keys, Pegula, whose net worth is nearly £15 million with a potential inheritance of £5.5 billion, suggested that Murray saw the coaching opportunity as a chance to gain valuable insights into Djokovic’s mindset.
Pegula remarked, “I think he was so intrigued. I believe he thought, ‘This is so peculiar, I’m so curious. Why do you want me to coach you, but I’m also fascinated by how your mind works and your thought process on the court.’ I witnessed them together, and it was truly intriguing.”
Keys also found the partnership between Murray and Djokovic to be unique, supporting Pegula’s views that Murray aimed to understand what makes Djokovic such a formidable opponent.
Reflecting on their coaching stint, Murray revealed that he saw it as a “unique opportunity” after Djokovic unexpectedly offered him the position. Djokovic, on the other hand, shared that they both felt they had reached the peak of their partnership on the court and decided to part ways.
Despite the split, Djokovic expressed gratitude for the experience, stating that Murray’s tennis insights were invaluable. He acknowledged Murray’s exceptional tennis knowledge and expressed optimism for whoever Murray works with next, highlighting the wealth of knowledge Murray has to offer.
