An alert of significance has been issued to numerous users of Gmail, urging attention for those who are uneasy about artificial intelligence scanning their emails. The most recent advisory was shared online by Lori Greiner, a well-known American television personality and entrepreneur.
Over the weekend, the star of Shark Tank posted a message on Instagram, emphasizing the importance for Gmail account holders to be vigilant and share the information with their loved ones. The alert raises questions about Google’s new AI-driven features, which aim to analyze inboxes for smart searches, contextual responses, and email summaries. Despite Google’s assurance that it does not read messages for personal use, Greiner expressed apprehension.
In her Instagram post, the celebrity stressed the significance of not ignoring the warning if you have a Gmail account. She highlighted that Google has been allowing AI to scan all emails, including sensitive information like financial documents, tax details, and personal conversations without user awareness.
For those concerned about this issue, it is possible to disable this feature easily. Greiner mentioned that users can deactivate AI in Gmail within 30 seconds by following simple steps. This includes accessing Settings, selecting “see all settings,” disabling smart features in Gmail, Chat, and Meet, and unchecking boxes for Workspace and other products to prevent data usage for AI.
Google maintains that personal data is not accessed by its team or third parties and assures the security of all information. The tech giant clarified that its foundational AI models, such as Gemini, are not trained on personal emails. Gemini in Gmail is designed to process specific requests securely within the inbox without retaining any data afterward.
Despite Google’s assurances, users who are uncomfortable with AI scanning their emails may consider turning off the smart feature in Gmail.
