A group of academics from Oxford University are depending on charitable assistance for their meals, according to homeless advocates. The high demand for financial support is pushing many individuals to the edge in the historic city, including university lecturers. Approximately 150 people per week are seeking aid, food, and even shower facilities from the organization Oxford Gatehouse.
Sasha East, the CEO of the charity, highlighted that even full-time employees are visiting weekly for food because they cannot afford meals after covering their expenses. She debunked the misconception that individuals using homeless services are always dealing with addiction issues, revealing that Oxford University academics also seek help just to eat. The homelessness crisis in Oxford has worsened significantly, attributed to the cost of living and the challenging rental market.
Over the past year, the number of rough sleepers in the city has surged, compounded by the cost-of-living crisis and the diminishing and expensive rental market in Oxford, as stated by charity workers. The looming crisis prompted a call for action ahead of the Oxford CEO Sleepout scheduled for Oct. 9 at University Parks to raise essential funds for the homeless.
Ms. East emphasized the severe strain individuals are facing, evident in their expressions, narratives, and the increasing demand for sustenance, warmth, and security. The funds generated through CEO Sleepout are crucial in meeting this rising demand.
CEO Sleepout, launched more than a decade ago with initial events in the North East, has raised £5.5 million nationally to support numerous frontline causes. The charity involves business leaders spending a night outdoors in the cold, with plans to host a record number of events across the UK this year. Bianca Robinson, the charity’s CEO, expressed the necessity of such initiatives due to the worsening homelessness crisis in the UK annually, calling for more action from authorities.
Their latest campaign, ‘At Your Doorstep,’ aims to motivate entrepreneurs and business figures to address homelessness, emphasizing that one does not need vast wealth to make a positive impact. Bianca highlighted that a simple gesture like offering one night of sleeping outdoors with a compassionate heart can contribute significantly to the cause.
