A recent extensive poll has debunked the far-right’s negative portrayal of a fractured Britain, revealing the nation’s core values of tolerance and open-mindedness. The “Giga Poll,” involving over 45,300 participants and covering a wide range of topics, indicates that racial tensions do not dominate the country as suggested by far-right narratives.
Commissioned by green entrepreneur Dale Vince, the survey aimed to uncover the true sentiments of the British public amidst prevalent far-right rhetoric. The results showcase the British populace’s qualities of compassion, decency, and tolerance, challenging the divisive narratives often highlighted in the media.
The poll, conducted by anti-fascist group HOPE not hate and backed by the TUC, sheds light on the public’s perspectives, indicating a significant lead for Nigel Farage’s Reform over Labour. Furthermore, the findings reveal widespread dissatisfaction with the government’s performance, with a majority feeling unheard and overlooked by those in power.
Contrary to right-wing propaganda portraying Britain as a lawless and racially divided nation, the poll emphasizes that most Britons perceive their communities as peaceful and harmonious, despite ongoing challenges. It underscores a rejection of fear-mongering tactics aimed at instilling a sense of constant threat among the population.
Addressing concerns beyond immigration and asylum, the survey highlights the cost-of-living crisis as the top worry for 56% of respondents, followed by healthcare at 38%. Only a minority rank immigration/asylum as a major issue, reflecting broader priorities among the public.
The poll exposes a desire for greater public involvement in decision-making processes, with a significant percentage advocating for new methods such as citizens’ assemblies. Additionally, there is strong support for environmental initiatives, with a majority endorsing measures for carbon neutrality and holding big businesses accountable for emissions.
Overall, the poll underscores the public’s call for decisive action to safeguard their interests and communities, signaling a need for more proactive and radical policymaking. It also highlights specific areas where improvements are urgently required, such as regulating water companies and addressing concerns about job security in the face of technological advancements.
