“Which? Report: Smaller Mobile Networks Outshine Big Four”

A recent report by consumer group Which? reveals that the major mobile networks, including EE, Vodafone, Three, and O2, are falling short in overall performance compared to their smaller competitors. After surveying over 5,000 smartphone users nationwide, the study found that lesser-known networks often excel in providing better value and customer service.

The report aimed to assess which providers are meeting customer expectations and which ones are not. It highlighted that the traditional “Big Four” networks are trailing behind many smaller rivals in terms of performance. Leading the rankings were Talkmobile, followed by Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, and SMARTY, with EE ranking the highest among the big four, coming in ninth place. O2 and Three were among the lower-ranked networks.

Price emerged as a significant factor in the report, with customers on the major networks paying an average of £16 per month for a SIM-only deal, while those on smaller networks paid only £9. Despite the lower prices, smaller providers often leverage the major networks’ infrastructure, ensuring comparable signal and service quality without the premium costs associated with well-known brands.

Switching between networks is easier than expected, with some customers able to transfer in as little as 10 minutes. One consumer mentioned switching from O2 to a SMARTY plan within minutes, saving around £200 annually due to better pricing.

Natalie Hitchins, Head of Home Products and Services at Which?, emphasized that smaller providers consistently outperform larger mobile firms by offering superior customer service and more affordable deals, with many avoiding mid-contract price hikes to provide customers with cost certainty. She encouraged dissatisfied customers or those looking to save money to consider switching to providers offering better value.

The report also included full scores from Which?, with Talkmobile, Tesco Mobile, Giffgaff, SMARTY, and Voxi among the top-rated providers, while EE, Vodafone, O2, and Three received varying scores based on customer satisfaction and pricing.

Overall, the study underscores the competitive advantages of smaller mobile networks in delivering better value and service quality to customers, encouraging users to explore alternative options for a more satisfactory mobile experience.
