“Virgin Media O2 Warns of AI Scam Surge”

Virgin Media O2 users are being warned to stay vigilant as a concerning new scam has emerged. The telecommunications company has issued an alert following a significant increase in individuals targeted by fraudulent call center numbers generated by artificial intelligence.

Reports indicate that millions may have already fallen victim to dialing these deceptive numbers, which ultimately connect them to cybercriminals seeking to steal sensitive information, such as financial details.

It has been revealed that approximately 13% of UK consumers have encountered counterfeit customer service numbers through search engines or AI tools, highlighting the prevalence of this scam.

Virgin Media has disclosed that criminals are taking advantage of AI-driven technology to present unsuspecting consumers with fake contact information of reputable brands, leading to data theft and fraudulent activities.

As people increasingly rely on AI-generated search results, hackers find it easier to ensnare their targets through misleading phone numbers and websites.

To safeguard against such scams, Virgin Media advises customers to only use authentic service numbers provided on official company platforms like websites, apps, or bills. For those needing assistance from O2 or Virgin Media, contacting 202 from an O2 device or dialing 150 from a landline respectively is recommended.

Furthermore, individuals are urged to exercise caution when encountering phone numbers from search engines, social media posts, or AI tools. It is essential to refrain from sharing personal information or security codes with unsolicited callers, regardless of who they claim to represent.

Murray Mackenzie, Director of Fraud Prevention at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the risks posed by AI tools in enabling fraudsters to generate convincing fake numbers, underscoring the need for vigilance when seeking assistance online.

Virgin Media O2 is actively combatting scams by blocking known fraudulent numbers on their network and leveraging AI technology to flag over 1 billion suspicious calls. The public is encouraged to report suspicious numbers to 7726 to aid in swiftly shutting down scams in the future.
