Beware: EE Customers Warned of Resurgent Scam

EE mobile customers are being cautioned about a resurgence of a scam text message. Cybersecurity experts at Bitdefender have flagged urgent messages circulating among EE users, threatening the loss of valuable EE reward points unless immediate action is taken.

The scam involves cybercriminals posing as EE to entice individuals into clicking on deceptive links leading to counterfeit websites. These fraudulent sites are designed to capture login credentials, enabling the scammers to profit illicitly.

The success of this scam hinges on creating a false sense of urgency, hoping that recipients will act impulsively without considering the legitimacy of the message.

Bitdefender highlighted the manipulative tactic used by scammers, emphasizing that authentic EE alerts would only appear within official EE accounts, not through unsolicited texts. Users should be wary of messages pressuring quick responses and treat such communications as suspicious. Any doubtful texts should be forwarded to 7726 and then promptly deleted.

This type of scam has previously targeted EE customers, with reports dating back to earlier this year where users fell victim to convincing fake messages about reward points. One user recounted receiving a deceptive text and unknowingly accessing a fake EE website, while another admitted to falling for the scam by entering personal information before realizing the ruse.

EE has reiterated that it does not operate a points program and has shared examples of scam messages to create awareness among its customers.

To safeguard against falling prey to such scams, EE advises users to refrain from clicking on unknown links in text messages, avoid responding to suspicious messages, refrain from calling back numbers from suspicious texts, and never disclose personal or financial information.

EE users are urged to remain vigilant in light of these ongoing scams.
