O2 has officially announced a substantial free upgrade for millions of its users, introducing rapid 5G+ connectivity nationwide in the UK. This advancement ensures improved mobile coverage and significantly faster download speeds, with a notable 50% increase compared to the previous 4G network.
In addition to the speed and reliability enhancements, this upgrade is anticipated to prolong battery life as devices will consume less power by no longer requiring simultaneous connections to both 4G and 5G networks. This sets it apart from conventional 5G technology, which relies on 4G infrastructure for operation.
The rollout of this upgrade is currently underway for users equipped with 5G+ compatible devices and SIM cards, benefitting over 700 towns and cities across the country.
Christian Hindennach, the Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Media O2, highlighted the significance of this development, stating, “Our 5G+ service is now accessible to millions of customers nationwide, available to all O2 users on every Plan, distinguishing us from other networks.”
He further emphasized the performance boost in high-traffic areas like major venues, enhancing the experience for residents and visitors alike. This initiative aligns with Virgin Media O2’s ongoing commitment to network enhancement and ensuring a more dependable service by investing £2 million daily to prepare customers for upcoming mobile innovations.
To verify local availability, users can utilize O2’s postcode checker tool. Notable 5G+ compatible devices include the iPhone 15, 16 (including 16e), and 17 ranges, as well as the Google Pixel 9 series (including Fold) and 10 series (including Fold).
5G+ represents an upgraded iteration of 5G networks that leverages advanced technologies such as higher-frequency spectrum, enhanced antennas, and network optimization to deliver accelerated speeds, reduced latency, and increased capacity.
