Irish Sprinter She’s Quality Passes Away after Breeders’ Cup Tragedy

Irish sprinter She’s Quality has tragically passed away in a hospital after sustaining a pelvic fracture while competing at the Breeders’ Cup in Del Mar, California. The four-year-old filly, a standout performer for Jack Davison based in Dunboyne, Co Meath, had garnered over £250,000 in earnings and achieved four second-place finishes in Group races during 2025.

She was considered a strong contender for the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint, but her race ended abruptly as she fell to the back of the 13-horse field. With the gap widening between her and the rest of the competitors, jockey Colin Keane decided to pull her up on the back stretch.

Following the incident, She’s Quality was dismounted swiftly, and veterinary professionals rushed to assist her, with screens erected around her for privacy and medical attention.

Dr. Scott Hay, the on-call veterinarian for the Breeders’ Cup, expressed concerns about the filly’s condition post-race, noting that she displayed lameness in her right hind leg. She was subsequently transported via equine ambulance to a hospital for further evaluation by veterinary specialists.

Unfortunately, a day later, Jack Davison shared the heartbreaking news of She’s Quality’s demise due to the pelvic fracture suffered during the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint. Despite receiving initial care and showing stability at the San Luis Rey Equine Hospital, her condition deteriorated overnight, leading to the difficult decision to euthanize her.

Davison expressed deep sorrow over the loss of She’s Quality, highlighting her exceptional qualities as a racehorse and the profound impact she had on their team. He extended gratitude to his staff for their dedicated care over the years, emphasizing the close bond they shared with the filly.

In response, the Breeders’ Cup offered condolences, acknowledging the profound impact of She’s Quality’s passing on those involved in the care and support of equine athletes.
