A fortunate man stumbled upon a lottery ticket he had forgotten about in his coat pocket for six months, only to realize he had won £13 million with it.
The man, a father residing in the Frankfurt region of Germany, had been unaware of his windfall throughout the spring and summer despite a public campaign to locate him, according to Lotto Hessen company. The revelation came to him as the weather cooled down, prompting him to retrieve a jacket from his closet that he hadn’t worn since March.
Upon finding the ticket and deciding to verify the numbers, he was “stunned” to learn he was the fortunate recipient of €15,336,286.40 (approximately £13.3 million). “It wasn’t until the weekend that I found the ticket again, folded up in the inside pocket of my jacket,” the man revealed.
“After checking the numbers on my phone and seeing the winning amount, I was completely taken aback – thankfully I was seated, or my knees would have buckled,” he expressed. The father had even heard about the search effort, initiated when the winning ticket remained unclaimed for two months, and conceded that he had pondered at the time: “How foolish could someone be not to collect it?”
Nevertheless, he remarked, “It never dawned on me that I could be the individual they were searching for.” When asked about his plans for the substantial winnings, he mentioned his intention to purchase a new sofa for the living room first.
He and his wife shared that the remaining money would be allocated towards providing for their children. The affluent couple disclosed that they would keep their significant win confidential. Lotto spokesperson Martin Blach remarked, “Out of sight, out of mind – unbelievable, but that’s likely how it transpired.”
In a similar scenario back in 2013, a British couple achieved millionaire status through the lottery after overlooking their numbers for three weeks. David Nelson, 77, and Susan, 67, stumbled upon their winning £1 million ticket lying dormant in a drawer.
Upon noticing an appeal for a missing EuroMillions Millionaire Raffle winner to step forward, they realized, “It’s us.” Retired upholsterer David shared, “I had simply stashed it away safely for a few weeks, forgetting to check it at the time.”
“Then I decided to inspect my ticket at midnight one night upon learning of an unclaimed winner. I was utterly surprised to discover it was the winner. I woke Susan up to share the news. It’s incredible,” he recounted.
