Michelle Tolley received recognition at the Daily Mirror’s Pride of Britain Awards for her advocacy work, marking a high point in her journey. A dedicated campaigner, the 60-year-old (who humorously describes herself as “59 plus one”) has been a staunch voice seeking justice for over 30,000 individuals affected by the NHS infected blood scandal.
In a remarkable turn of events, Michelle, along with fellow campaigners Andrew Evans and Jason Evans, was honored with a Special Recognition Award at last year’s Pride of Britain ceremony. During the event, while witnessing midwife Agnes Nisbett being presented with a cruise holiday by P&O Cruises, the new headline sponsor of the awards, hosts Carol Vorderman and Ashley Banjo surprised all the winners by announcing that each of them would also be gifted a cruise vacation in 2024.
Reflecting on this unexpected delight, Michelle shared how it came after years of health struggles and relentless efforts to support other victims and hold authorities accountable. Michelle contracted hepatitis C through a blood transfusion after giving birth in 1987. Enduring 28 years of undiagnosed symptoms and delays in treatment, she channeled her anger into constructive actions, managing support groups, collaborating with the Hepatitis C Trust, and contributing to the official government inquiry.
The prospect of a tranquil holiday was a welcomed change after years of hard work. Michelle and her husband Dean, who hadn’t traveled abroad since their wedding in 1984, eagerly embraced the opportunity. Planning a Canary Islands cruise for May, Michelle even hinted at renewing their vows. To her surprise, P&O Cruises not only facilitated the vow renewal but also showered them with special treats including flowers, photographs, and meals.
Embarking on the Ventura cruise ship, Michelle marveled at the experience, reminiscing it felt like unwrapping Christmas presents. Amidst enjoying the ship’s amenities, dining options, and entertainment, they explored Madeira and the Canary Islands, discovering new sights and experiences like banana tree-filled landscapes in Madeira and a tuk-tuk tour in Las Palmas.
From colorful Old Town explorations to scenic river cruises in Lisbon, the couple savored every moment, with Michelle recounting the fun-filled interactions with local guides. Their cruise experience left them eager for more, with Michelle emphasizing the exceptional service, delectable cuisine, and warm hospitality aboard the Ventura.
Encouraging others to embark on a cruise adventure, Michelle enthused about the fantastic facilities and the friendly atmosphere onboard. She fondly recalled feeling like royalty and expressed a desire to relive the memorable journey, highlighting the exceptional staff and overall cruise experience as reasons to embark on a cruise vacation.
