A young man is suspected to have been attacked and devoured by a crocodile while swimming with his brother. Jeffrey Masing Win, a trainee electrician, was enjoying the waters of Sungai Semanok River in Malaysia when the crocodile suddenly appeared and seized him on a Saturday evening. Despite efforts from his brother to rescue him, the 21-year-old was dragged underwater by the reptile and disappeared.
Emergency services were delayed in responding due to the remote location with poor phone coverage. Firefighters and search and rescue volunteers were dispatched, but the search was challenging as the river’s shallow and narrow conditions forced them to start from a spot 500 meters away from the incident location.
Search operations, in collaboration with other agencies, focused on the area of the attack. Despite extensive efforts by the search and rescue teams, Jeffrey remains missing. Operations were halted following advice from the Tatau Police and are scheduled to resume the next day.
In a separate incident on September 18, a 12-year-old boy named Arif Fahmi Aiman Mohammad Tinggal was tragically killed by a crocodile in the same region. The boy was fishing alone in Sungai Kampung Empila river when he was snatched by a crocodile, with his body found later with bite marks.
Crocodile attacks are a persistent danger in Sarawak, especially along rivers and estuaries where saltwater crocodiles are prevalent. The region has a high rate of crocodile encounters, often involving fishermen or villagers near water bodies. Authorities have taken measures such as periodic culls, warning signs, and public awareness campaigns to mitigate the risks.
Additionally, in another incident this month, tragedy struck a family on a holiday at Disney World when a two-year-old toddler was snatched by an alligator. Despite the father’s efforts to save the child, the boy, Lane Graves, was found drowned in the lake on the resort premises.
After an extensive search effort involving emergency personnel and equipment, the toddler’s body was recovered. Authorities confirmed the cause of death as drowning due to the alligator attack. The family, though distraught, expressed some relief at the recovery of their son’s body.
The incident occurred at the Seven Seas Lagoon on the grounds of Disney’s Grand Floridian Resort, where the family had been enjoying outdoor activities. The boy’s parents, along with his sister, were present during the tragic event.
